It’s autumn now.

On September 24th, Mining Ministers Forum of CHINA MINING Congress and Expo 2017 was held at Meijing Convention and Exhibition Center of Tianjin. Mining ministers from home and abroad come together to discuss development opportunities and strategies of global mining.

Sharing views on the development of mining resources

“The global economy has slowed down in the past few years. The data released by IMF showed that the world economic growth rate was 5.4% and 3.1% in 2010 and 2016 respectively. This year, the expected growth rate is 3.4%”, the Hon. Mario Alfonso Cantú Suárez, Undersecretariat of Mining of Mexico, Secretariat of Economy, Mexico, analyzed the challenges facing the global minng from the perspective of the global economic situation. He thought the global mining industry shows several features affected by the economic situation: “It is more difficult to prospect and exploit mines. The decline of mining reserves makes it necessary to seek mining resources that buried more deeply. Developing countries will play an increasingly important role in mining development. These trends bring us many challenges in technology, resource management and investment decisions.”

Mining ministers of Sudan, Argentina, etc are confident of mining development. “Global mining is recovering. Sudan has large amounts of mining resources, among which, some have been proven and some have been exploited. Gold is the main resource and there are other basic mines, such as iron, chromium, copper, zinc, nickel”, said the Hon. Hashim·Mohammed·Salem, the Minister of Mines Ministry of Sudan.

The Hon. Mario·Capello, Undersecretary of Mining Development, Ministry of Energy and Mining (Secretariat of Mining), Argentina, talked as if enumerating one's family valuables: ”This year, we paid much attention on copper mine, gold mine, silver mine, lithium and other metallic minerals. Argentina with rich resource reserves can provide raw materials for world economic development.”

Seeking ways to utilize and protect resources

“Mines Ministry of Sudan paid much attention on environmental protection”, said the Hon. Hashim·Mohammed·Salem, the Minister of Mines Ministry of Sudan. Green development, low-carbon development and sustainable development will be our common concern.

“In the past few years, Sudan government has committed itself to environment protection. It aimed to reduce the use of resources like mercury using alternative resources. At the same time, we will work to use mines for sustainable development, making efforts for environmental protection and the improvement of people’s well-being.”

Ms. Marian Campbell Jarvis, Assistant Deputy Minister(Lands and Minerals Sector), Natural Resources Canada said that Canada is transforming to low carbon economy, so it is focusing on environmental protection and clean growth. She said: “Canada is developing mines in a sustainable-development way to ensure that our industry is beneficial to the environment and society. We take specific measures including strict environment control and solid legal guarantees. Canada is leading the world in clean techonology and innovation. It intends to recover the land resources and improve the energy efficiency through programs like clean mining.”

Promoting mutual benefit and win-win outcome

During the half-day forum, ministers of all the Mines Ministries gave a detailed introduction of mines, mining development policies, laws and regulations, mining development prospects and plannings and expressed their wish to attract foreign investments.

“Government of South Africa attaches great importance to mining investment and welcome Chinese companies to invest in South Africa. We promise to investors that the procedures are simple.” said Mr. Thabo Mokoena, Director-General, Ministry of Mineral Resources, South Africa.

Ms. Marian Campbell Jarvis, said: “Canada will encourage companies to make investments through tax policies and industrial policies. Canada provided many public and free geologic information to lower the investors’ cost; Canada will also provide energy and maps of mines covering areas with or without resources. In addition, Canada has targeted earth science plans which can help investors to find out mining resources deeply buried underground.”

“This forum is of great significance to developing countries”, said the Hon. Ricardo Labó Fossa, Vice Minister of Mines, Ministry of Energy and Mines, Peru. CHINA MINING Congress and Expo indicated a clear direction for international mining cooperation.

“Today’s forum make us realize the huge potential and broad prospects of international mining cooperation. Free talks deepen our mutual understanding and cooperation. We fully felt the wish and determination of international mining community to expand exchanges and cooperation”, said the Hon. Ling Yueming, Deputy Minister of Ministry of Land and Resources PRC.
